Harmonix and the Super Bowl Halftime show

Now when I first learned that the Super Bowl Halftime show was going to be performed by my idol band The Who, I was more than happy to watch the show. What I didn’t realize was that Harmonix had a little trick up its sleave in that it was going to release a version of the halftime show as downloadable content right after the game and trust me it is a lot of fun to play and it is worth it. The song only cost $2 (160MS) and is the full Super Bowl version. Here is a video capture I did last night of the song in  action on Rock Band. To compare I’ll also put up The Who’s performance as well.

Enjoy.

It was a very cool stage also.

IT WAS AWESOME…..

Mass Effect 2 Thoughts….initial

Mass Effect 2, probably the crown-jewel of this year’s RPG games of 2010, was released yesterday for the US. Now I generally don’t get the game at midnight on release day cause I am not that motivated about a game. I mean it has to be a HUGE release for me to leave my house at 11 to go get the game. Bioware, however, had me convinced that I was getting the game at midnight when I saw those character videos. Now my initial thoughts about the game were “wow this story goes along fast,” and if you have played the game it really does. Since I logged into xbox live and started playing the game on Jan 26, I logged in over 14 hours of game-time with my imported character from ME1. I’ll have a full review of the game when all kinds of goodies in the next couple weeks. I would have it sooner but I am having too much fun playing the game. Which is where I leave it.

PEACE, I’m gonna go play Mass Effect 2.

Transformers: War for Cybertron Game Trailer

Looks like another installment on the Transformers game series is coming soon. Looks like this series exists on it’s own with nothing to do with either current movie or comic book continuity.

Speaking of Rediculous Xmas Gifts…

Give Someone You Love the Gift of Gaming with Market Appreciation

Give Someone You Love the Gift of Gaming with Market Appreciation

If you haven’t seen this yet, put this on the list of Stupid-Assed-Xmas-Gifts-That-Didn’t-Need-To-Exist: A Solid Gold PS3. Really? Really?Holy Horse nipples! Why?

Well the designs and substitutions are actually quite nice. The artistic craftsmanship needed to create these blinged beacons of technology is far beyond the amateur. Sure, a $5,000 Playstation 3 is a bit on the silly side of life, but the platinum iMac is nice, and I would love a gold MacBook Pro. Who wouldn’t? So Instead of giving your loved one a simple tennis bracelet or a new Lexus, give them something that is beautiful, has a function, and appreciates with the commodities market.

Game Review: Left4Dead2

left_4_dead_2_frontcover_large_8jHmYBS5Wf77E60When I first reviewed the demo, I was excited for this game, and equally excited to play the full version. Thanks to GameFly, the full version arrived in my mailbox, and after I watched the Star Trek BluRay 5 times, I popped in the game, and played through the first level before passing out from my all day geek-gasm.

Left4Dead was one of those games that I was late the party for. I wasn’t interested in a zombie shooter since Halo3 and then Gears of War 2 were all the shooters I needed. But, my buddies in the office eventually persuaded me to give it a go and I was glad I did. The game has great motion capture where it looked like these zombies were actually running at you, and dodging gun fire. The lighting was intense, the AI’s shadow detection was spot on, and the sound design was incredible. It was an immersive experience that was intense and slightly frightening the first time through. And with repeat play, the game was still just as fun. If I had a rough day at work, I could pop in my copy, and see some heads splatter.

Any sequel to a game is a gamble and when you’re holding the copy in your hands at the store you begin to wonder; Will they change the controls? Will there be a completely different graphic look to the game? Left4Dead2 never gave me a sense of worry. Honestly, what could go wrong? Every mission seemed to flow into the other, and it seemed like this zombie infected world could last forever. What could they improve, or take away in the name of improving the game? Well I’m glad to report, they didn’t remove anything bad, and that this game is capitally enjoyable.

The NPCs are enjoyable companions once again with their own personalities that helps make the game even more entertaining and go faster. The NPCs seem to help out a bit more in this game than in the first. I always felt that I was stuck with 3 nominally lazy people in order to survive in the first game, but the AI was cranked up in the sequel, and it feels like there is now a solid team of 4 survivors struggling together. The game play is the same. There aren’t any extra controls, or new combos to learn, but there is now a wider variety of options available to you.

Melee weapons have been added, as well as several additional guns and even large weapons such as grenade launchers. The melee weapons are a real treat. There’s no ammo to worry about, and everything from the crow bar, to the cricket bat, the chainsaw, and the samurai sword are all brilliant. The extra gore that splatters on screen is fantastic, but be aware of taking damage. The zombies will dodge your swings, and with close quarters fighting, you stand to take more damage, especially when the hoards show up.

L4D2 thumbAnother great addition are the little side missions in the game that are necessary to help the team progress from point A to point B. Instead wandering around, you now encounter different people and tasks that make the game more enjoyable. The additional medical and incendiary devices are clever as well. Vomit, adrenaline shots, and a defribulator are all great additions to the quest, and give you options for helping the survivors. And a small feature I really enjoyed was the scrolling list of achievements as the game loads, which saves me from jumping into menus.

The only downside I would have are the graphics. After playing CoDMW2, everything looks like playschool, but I was hoping for a bit more of an upgrade to see more realistic set of villains and environments. The sound design is still top notch with the game utilizing all my surround sound to create a lush audio environment to immerse the player. The new southern music is a great addition, furthering the experience of being trapped in a post-apocalyptic New Orleans. This game will be a great addition to my shelf, and I’m sure I will now have a new favorite to throw into my Xbox and blow off some steam.
